Introduction: The Commerce & Industries Department was established in 2016 through the amalgamation of the erstwhile Industries Department and the Trade & Commerce Department. Currently, the department operates through three primary wings:
- Industrial Development Wing
- Commerce Wing
- Handloom, Textile & Handicrafts Wing
Historical Background: The roots of the department trace back to the Mizo Hills District under Assam State, where a small Rural Industrial Unit was managed by a Project Officer. Following the creation of the Mizoram Union Territory in 1972, a full-fledged Industries Department was established. Initially, Sericulture was a wing under this department until it became a separate entity in 1985. The Trade & Commerce Department was subsequently established in 1987 and has since grown into one of the most vital departments under the Government of Mizoram.
Administration & Structure: The department is administratively headed by the Secretary to the Government of Mizoram, while the Directorate is led by the Director. In addition to its three core wings, the department oversees several boards, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and agencies:
- Board: Khadi and Village Industries (KVI) – overseen by a Board of Directors.
- PSUs: ZOHANDCO, ZIDCO, MIFPA, and MAMCO – each led by their respective Chairman and Managing Directors.
- Society: Bamboo Development Agency (BDA).
The Commerce & Industries Department maintains a presence across Mizoram with offices established in every district known as District Commerce & Industries Offices.
